Hello everyone! My name is Clarisa Rodriguez and I am a senior at CSUN this year, majoring in English Literature. While I do not plan on using my degree to go into teaching, I do think that there is an interesting conversation surrounding the role of technology in education. At lower levels I think it's important to minimize the amount on technology used to educate children, especially since they are bound to be exposed to it at home. But I do think there are instances in which using technology can be very helpful. About a year ago my cousin asked for my help in teaching her son how to read and write, since his knowledge went as far as being able to write his own name. I've never had any experience in teaching children but my sister, who works at a school, recommended me an app called Reading Eggs. This program was so helpful in teaching him phonetics through engaging ways, which I personally would not have been able to do by using traditional methods. At the end of summer, he was able to read and write at a level that was appropriate for his grade and age. Another thing I've noticed about technology, as an English student, is that it would be incredibly inconvenient to complete, turn in, and grade assignments needed to pass classes without it. Especially since COVID happened and everything school related went online, I think that it has become apparent how convenient it is to use technology. I can't truly imagine having to write multiple essays a semester or have to wait for them to be graded without using Canvas or computers in general. Anyone who was studying at the time that the pandemic happened understands what it is like to both learn without technology and with it which allows us to have a unique perspective on this discussion.

Hi Clarisa,

First of all I’d just like to say that I really like how you set up your blog. The colors and the pictures definitely make it pop which I love. The points you made in your blog definitely had me thinking and I do agree that media technology makes assignment submissions easier. I think that it wasn’t until after Covid that teachers became more dependent on using media technology to teach. I do however believe that students should physically write their papers because it takes more of an effort to do. I feel that things have just become easier and easier that they don’t try to put in as much effort as they should. Plus I believe that…

Hi Clarisa!

I definitely can relate in being someone studying the course, but not necessarily interested in teaching.

I also wanted to say that I agree with some of what you say here for sure, but I would want to add that access to technology should be used in education, so long as it is purely for educational purposes. What degree of technology young people have access to could be paramount for their development, and having a child with access to AI or other resources could cause much more harm than good.

Hi there Clarisa firstly just wanted to say I love the layout of your blog. Aesthetically super cool and I can tell you put time and effort into it! Totally taking note into how I can incorporate this into my own blog! That's a great example you mention in a way that technology is useful and has a positive effect! I do think in our class discussion we focused a lot on the negatives but there are certainly positives. Absolutely since covid happened, what would we have done without technology. It was 100% out saving grace. Between zoom, canvas, or google classroom. However it was a double edge sword because although it certainly made our classrooms accessible to our fingertips.…

Hi Clarisa,

Thanks for sharing your perspective on technology. I was somewhat surprised by one thing you wrote-- I assumed that young people who experienced remote learning during COVID would have negative associations with it. Yet, you emphasize its convenience and seem to think increased reliance on technology is a positive outcome of the pandemic.

I've found online classes at the university level to be an extremely mixed bag. Still, I've been impressed by some of the technology used in middle and high school classrooms. For instance, teachers can monitor students' work in real-time from one location and target their instruction toward those who might be struggling. As with many things, the technology is only as good as the teacher…
